Overview

Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse, is a popular trekking peak in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It is one of the most accessible and frequently climbed peaks in the Everest region. Island Peak climbing is often included as an extension to the Everest Base Camp trek, allowing trekkers to combine a high-altitude adventure with the iconic trek to the base camp of the world's highest mountain.

Here are some key points to know about Island Peak climbing:

  1. Location: Island Peak is situated in the Everest region of Nepal, within the Sagarmatha National Park. It's a part of the Mahalangur Range in the Himalayas.

  2. Elevation: Island Peak stands at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) above sea level, making it a challenging but attainable peak for climbers with some prior mountaineering experience.

  3. Climbing Difficulty: Island Peak is considered a moderately technical peak. While it is not as challenging as some of the higher peaks in the region, it does require a basic knowledge of mountaineering skills such as rope work, ice and snow climbing, and acclimatization.

  4. Permits: Climbers need a climbing permit for Island Peak, which is obtained through the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). You will also need a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit as you'll be trekking in the Everest region.

  5. Guides and Support: It is highly recommended to hire an experienced guide or join an organized trekking and climbing expedition. These guides and agencies can provide logistical support, equipment, and ensure safety during the climb.

  6. Acclimatization: Proper acclimatization is crucial due to the high altitude. Trekkers usually spend time at higher elevations, including Everest Base Camp, to acclimatize before attempting the climb.

  7. Equipment: Climbers need specialized gear for Island Peak, including crampons, ice axes, helmets, and harnesses. Most climbers rent or hire this equipment in Kathmandu or Lukla.

  8. Best Time to Climb: The best time to climb Island Peak is during the pre-monsoon (spring) season (April to May) and post-monsoon (autumn) season (September to November) when the weather is relatively stable and the skies are clear.

  9. Duration: The Island Peak climbing expedition typically takes about 16 to 20 days, including the trek to and from Lukla.

Island Peak offers stunning panoramic views of the Everest region, including Mount Everest itself, and is a rewarding experience for climbers looking to test their skills at high altitudes. It's essential to be well-prepared, both physically and mentally, and to have the appropriate training and equipment for the climb.

Island Peak expedition in Nepal with Mountain Hiking & trekking team Apr 2019 • Friends This is my third out of four times in Nepal that I’ve engaged Mountain Hiking and Trekking services. Gokyo (Chola Pass), Everest Basecamp and Imja Tse (Island Peak). The success of all the treks were made possible by the professional service from their awesome trekking and climbing Sherpas and Tandi himself which were all very friendly and we became mates. They really took good care of you not only in Kathmandu but whilst on the mountain region which to me is very important due to the other factors, e.g. AMS etc. Their detailed and flexible arrangements made the trek enjoyable. I highly recommend Tandi from Mountain Hiking and Trekking if you intend to trek in Nepal. Thanks Tandi
